ICD-10-CM …FINALLY!!! (BUT NOT FOR A WHILE) On Friday, January 16, 2009 the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) took a giant step forward with ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS. On that date, DHHS published a Final Rule in the Federal Register to adopt both ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS with an implementation date of October 1, 2013. Now that we have a Final Rule with an implementation date of October 1, 2013, Channel Publishing can begin planning to continue with its ICD-10-CM products (videotape series and books) and services (seminars, workshops). At this time we are in the process of producing a draft version of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS in early 2010 (after the government has completed its annual update to ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS). Customers may place advance orders for our Generic ICD-10-CM (Draft) and ICD-10-PCS (Draft) and save 75% off the list price through July 31, 2009 (see Ordering Information on this web site). The actual training seminars and training materials will not be necessary until much closer to implementation as ICD-10-CM/PCS implementation is still over 4 years away. Channel Publishing certainly plans to have a complete set of training and educational materials for our customers when it’s time to begin the actual training. It is important to remember that NCHS and CMS will continue to update ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS yearly until they both become effective. In addition, they have other decisions to make, such as whether or not to update ICD-9-CM the year before ICD-10-CM becomes effective (October 1, 2012). Obviously, maintaining up-to-date ICD-9-CM code books will remain essential and necessary for accurate coding and re-imbursement until ICD-10-CM replaces ICD-9-CM. The latest revised draft of ICD-10-CM is available on the NCHS website (www.cdc.gov/nchs/icd9.htm). The latest revised draft of ICD-10-PCS is available on the CMS website (www.cms.hhs.gov/ICD10). Channel Publishing remains very excited about ICD-10-CM. Although ICD-10-CM will be a challenge to learn and master while maintaining proficiency in ICD-9-CM, it will be a much better coding system for coders than ICD-9-CM. Channel Publishing certainly supports the careful, deliberate effort to make ICD-10-CM as good as it possibly can be prior to implementation.
