Well, here we go again… another delay in ICD-10!

The Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014 (H.R. 4302) is now law. This new law states “The Secretary of Health and Human Services may not, prior to October 1, 2015, adopt ICD-10 code sets as the standard for code sets under section …”

So, where do we go from here? On May 1, CMS officially announced a forthcoming interim rule that would set the new compliance date for October 1, 2015. We must continue to learn and be prepared for ICD-10. Failure to do so will put facilities and individuals at risk of being underprepared resulting in negative financial consequences.

What about ICD-9-CM updating? ICD-9-CM has been in a code freeze for the past few years and it was planned to be obsolete this October. As planned, NCHS and CMS have not made any plans to update ICD-9-CM. They do have a requirement to add any qualifying new technology procedures (e.g., epiretinal visual prosthesis added last year) and any new diagnoses. So we may see another very minor update to
ICD-9-CM this October 1, 2014. If so, we will post it on our web site similar to the last two years’ updates.

Channel Publishing will continue to offer both ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM/PCS code books and ICD-10 training materials. In anticipation of “going live with ICD-10” this fall, we planned to publish our most popular The Educational Annotation versions of ICD-10-CM/PCS. This new ICD-10 delay will push out publishing of The Educational Annotation versions of ICD-10-CM/PCS to the 2016 versions. We will publish a 2015 version of our Enhanced Generic ICD-10-CM/PCS later this fall.
